Smithfield Plant
Background
Located in Timaru, this plant specialises in sheep processing and rendering. Since 2017, NuGreen has upgraded lighting across approximately 80% of the site, delivering three projects over separate processing seasons through to 2020. Upgrades have been completed across yards, processing areas, chillers, workshops, thoroughfares, and common areas.
NuGreen Solution
NuGreen utilised off-season periods to install lighting within processing areas, minimising operational disruption, while completing upgrades in peripheral areas during the processing season.
The Results
The upgrade delivered significant performance improvements, with light levels in critical areas increasing by an average of 45% and power consumption reduced by around 64%.
The improved reliability of the new lighting system has reduced the need for ongoing maintenance, allowing resources to be redirected toward critical plant infrastructure and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
Additionally, MPI animal health and safety assessors have provided positive feedback, noting improved animal wellbeing in holding pens and yards due to enhanced lighting conditions.
We are really happy with our new lighting. It has been especially helpful for NuGreen to manage the capital raising process with our corporate team, which allows me to get on with our daily tasks. We just get an internal Capex raised and let NuGreen get on with delivery.
