Pukeuri
Background
The Pukeuri plant, located in Oamaru, is one of the oldest in the portfolio, with original structures dating back to the early 1900s. The site processes both cattle and sheep and includes a tannery and railway distribution. Due to its age, the plant had a wide mix of legacy lighting infrastructure with varying levels of degradation and fixture types. In the main processing areas, lighting was daisy-chained in series, meaning a single fixture failure required isolating the entire circuit.
This placed significant pressure on maintenance teams, who had limited time during shift changes to complete repairs.
NuGreen Solution
NuGreen addressed these challenges by deploying a standardised suite of luminaires across the site, aligning with lighting used in other plants to reduce complexity.
In processing areas, “quick connectors” were introduced, allowing individual fittings to be replaced without shutting down entire circuits – significantly reducing maintenance risks and downtime.
The Results
The new system has proven highly reliable, with a failure rate of less than 1%.
Overall, the upgrades at Pukeuri have delivered a 69% reduction in lighting-related energy consumption, while improving operational efficiency and easing the burden on maintenance teams.
The lighting in the slaughterboard has been bright and reliable. We haven’t had to change the lights in the last 3 years, which used to be part of our annual maintenance programme.
