Nexan’s 1 MW Project

Background

Nexans is committed to Net Zero by 2050 under SBTi, with a near-term target of reducing Scope 2 emissions by 100% by 2030. To address this at their New Plymouth manufacturing facility, Nexans required a large-scale behind-the-meter solar system funded through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). NuGreen Solutions was engaged in partnership with HELRimu to deliver what became the largest ground-mounted behind-the-meter solar system in Taranaki.

NuGreen Solution

NuGreen played a central role in the design, engineering, and delivery of the 1 MW solar system at the New Plymouth factory, working alongside Green Peak Energy and HELRimu. The system was engineered to directly supply the factory with renewable energy, reducing grid dependence and materially cutting Scope 2 emissions. The PPA structure provided Nexans with a viable pathway to large-scale renewable deployment without significant upfront capital.

The Results
  • Commissioned July 2024 – over 1.2 GWh of solar energy generated since commissioning.
  • Powers over 25% of the New Plymouth factory’s total energy demand.
  • Annual savings of 1,312,000 kWh and $83,600 achieved.
  • Largest ground-mounted behind-the-meter solar system in Taranaki.
