Alliance Overview
Background
NuGreen has partnered with Alliance since 2017 to upgrade inefficient legacy lighting across seven operating sites nationwide. The programme spans processing areas, cold storage, distribution centres, tanneries, yards, rendering facilities, administrative spaces, and thoroughfares.
The primary goal was to reduce energy consumption and minimise unplanned, disruptive maintenance, delivering financial returns aligned with corporate IRR targets. Secondary benefits included standardising lighting across sites, improving and maintaining consistent light levels and colour quality beyond MPI requirements, and removing high-risk infrastructure identified by insurers. These improvements have contributed to futureproofing Alliance’s operations.
NuGreen Solution
NuGreen delivered a full turnkey solution, including project scoping, system design, and quantification, as well as managing logistics, contractor deployment, and health and safety processes. A robust sign-off procedure supported by a comprehensive warranty programme was also implemented. Close collaboration with both corporate and site-level stakeholders ensured a seamless rollout.
The Results
To date, more than 9,200 luminaires have been installed across Alliance’s processing portfolio. This has resulted in annual energy savings exceeding 7,000,000 kWh – equivalent to the energy use of approximately 1,025 households – and a reduction of around 750 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
Delivered over four processing seasons, this initiative represents one of New Zealand’s most extensive lighting upgrade programmes in the primary sector.
