Tauriko (New Build) & E and F Blocks (Retrofit)

Lineage Cold Stores – Tauriko (New Build) & E & F Blocks (Retrofit)

Lineage Cold Stores is the world’s largest cold-storage provider, operating more than 30 temperature-controlled facilities across New Zealand. As part of their global carbon-reduction strategy, Lineage is investing heavily in renewable energy solutions to reduce emissions, improve energy performance, and strengthen operational resilience across their network.

NuGreen Energy Solutions was engaged to deliver large-scale solar systems at two major Lineage sites:

Tauriko, Tauranga (new build) and E & F Blocks, Hawke’s Bay (retrofit). Each facility has extremely high energy demand due to the nature of cold storage, with some areas operating at –24°C and experiencing peak-time grid charges up to 3.5× the national average.

NuGreen provided full end-to-end services, including system design, engineering, financial modelling, and installation. The systems were purpose-designed to reduce reliance on the national grid, enhance resilience during high-demand periods, and support Lineage’s global carbon-reporting commitments.

The resulting systems include:

Tauriko – New Build

  • 855 kW rooftop solar system engineered for the facility’s operating profile

E & F Blocks – Hawke’s Bay (Retrofit)

  • 1.6 MW solar system
  • Over 3,300 solar panels integrated into the existing building and main switchboard (MSB)

Both systems were designed to offset a significant portion of each site’s base-load energy demand and reduce exposure to peak-time electricity pricing. Each installation achieved the target of 15% net energy reduction at site level, delivering measurable operational savings and strong alignment with Lineage’s global sustainability goals.

NuGreen successfully delivered both projects on time and above performance expectations, with the Tauriko system generating approximately 6% above forecast. Following the success of these installations, Lineage has since partnered with NuGreen to roll out additional sites nationwide.

The solar systems now supply clean, renewable energy directly to each facility, strengthening energy resilience, lowering operational emissions, and contributing to Lineage’s long-term decarbonisation roadmap.

Lineage engaged Nugreen directly to deliver the solar array on one of our newest Cool Stores in the Tauriko Industrial Estate in Tauranga. They provided full design, financial modelling and full engineering support and to date the system has been generating above the forecast, approx 6% .  Nugreen and their contracting partner Feisst Group under promised and over delivered, they also worked in with our external engineering partner to ensure a seamless transition to solar energy.

We have been very pleased with the outcome at our Tauriko site and have now rolled out a further 4 sites with Nugreen, Mark, Neil and the team are a pleasure to work with and would recommend them to anyone looking to a renewable energy solution.
